Asset name:
Ashton House Heritage Museum
Description:
The Ashton House Heritage Site, located in Bide Arm, Newfoundland and Labrador, is a testament to the resilience and history of the Cassell family and the broader community's resettlement experiences. Originally constructed in 1952 by the eldest son of Ashton and Lily Cassell in Little Harbour Deep, this house became home to a family of fifteen. In 1965, during the resettlement of Little Harbour Deep, the house was transported by raft to Hooping Harbour. Just four years later, in 1969, it undertook another journey, floating from Hooping Harbour to Bide Arm as part of that community's resettlement. Remarkably, the Town of Roddickton-Bide Arm now proudly preserves this historic structure, which has been meticulously restored to its original condition. The house serves as a museum, showcasing memorabilia from the Cassell family and offering visitors a glimpse into the challenges and triumphs of resettled families in the region. Visitors can explore artifacts and photographs that narrate the story of the house and its inhabitants, providing a tangible connection to the past. The museum is open to the public from July 1 to August 31, with an admission fee of $3.
