French Shore Historical Society
Description:
The French Shore Historical Society (FSHS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the cultural and natural heritage of Newfoundland’s French Shore, specifically the communities of Conche, Croque, Grand Oies/St. Julien’s, and Main Brook. Established in February 2000, the society operates the French Shore Interpretation Centre in Conche, which showcases exhibits on the region’s history, including the French migratory fishery and local cultural narratives. A significant feature of the centre is the French Shore Tapestry, a 67.4-meter-long embroidered artwork completed in 2010, depicting the history of the region. In addition to historical preservation, FSHS supports traditional arts through the Centre for Textile Art, which officially opened on July 26, 2011. The centre encourages the craft of handmade textiles and promotes the rich textile-based traditions of the Great Northern Peninsula. In recognition of its efforts, the centre received a $9,400 grant from the IGA, which has been invested in workshops to sustain this culturally significant practice. These initiatives not only contribute to the region’s heritage conservation but also create employment opportunities, economic benefits, and boost tourism potential in Newfoundland’s Great Northern Peninsula.
