Dr. Henry N Payne Community Museum and craft shop
Description:
The Dr. Henry N. Payne Community Museum & Craft Shop, located at 143 Main Street in Cow Head, Newfoundland and Labrador, is the longest-running museum on Newfoundland's west coast. Housed in a two-story wooden building constructed in 1941 by Wallace Payne, the museum is named after Dr. Henry N. Payne—a dedicated educator, church lay reader, and community leader who resided there.
The museum offers an intriguing collection of artifacts that reflect the region's rich history and culture. Exhibits include 4,000-year-old stone tools used by indigenous hunters, a 700-year-old walrus skull, and an axe associated with a double-axe murder in 1809. Additionally, the museum showcases stories of rural life, outport women, and a collection of primitive hooked mats.
Visitors can also explore the craft shop, which features locally handcrafted items, providing a unique opportunity to appreciate and support local artisans. The museum typically operates from the end of May to mid-October, offering insights into the area's cultural and historical heritage.
