Asset name:

Coastal Trail - Port au Choix National Historic Site

Description:

The Coastal Trail at Port au Choix National Historic Site in Newfoundland and Labrador is a 1-kilometer (0.6-mile) one-way path connecting Old Port au Choix to the ancient Dorset habitation site at Phillip's Garden. This maintained trail features gentle terrain, though rock crossings can be slippery when wet. Hikers will traverse coastal tuckamore forests—dense, stunted tree growth shaped by harsh winds—and enjoy expansive ocean views. Along the way, it's common to spot small fishing boats offshore and, occasionally, whales. The trail also offers access to archaeological sites, providing insight into the area's rich history of human habitation spanning over 2,000 years. Visitors are advised to wear sturdy footwear and be cautious of slippery sections, especially after rain. The trail is open year-round, and a National Historic Site entry pass is required.
