Asset name:

Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve

Description:

Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve, located on the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, is a unique and ecologically significant area characterized by its cold climate, limestone barrens, and calcium-rich soil. Surrounded on three sides by the frigid waters of the Strait of Belle Isle, the reserve spans 3.6 square kilometers and supports over 300 plant species, including approximately 30 rare varieties, such as the endemic Burnt Cape cinquefoil. Its extreme arctic-like conditions create an environment where northern plant species thrive, making it one of the most botanically diverse areas in the province. Visitors can explore striking geological features like frost polygons and coastal sea caves, while also enjoying views of icebergs, whales, and seabirds. To protect this fragile ecosystem, guided tours are available, offering insights into its unique flora, geology, and wildlife.
